CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. – Firefighters from Bellevue were called out just after 6:00 a.m. after a homeowner on Rushford Lane called 911 to report a fire in their attached garage.

Anthony Filipski, chief of the Bellevue Fire Company tells Cheektowaga Chronicle the house and garage at 25 Rushford Lane was filled with smoke when firefighters arrived.

“We had to force entry to the side door because it was locked. Basically a small fire on the floor.  It looks like a box of rags started on fire,” said Filipski.

Crews used a couple of hand lines to put out the flames.  The fire did not extend into the building.

“Not really a lot of damage, just a lot of smoke damage throughout the house,” added Filipski. Damage estimates are said to be in the low thousands.

Filipski says, “The homeowner’s son smelled smoke, woke up and alerted the rest of the family and they got out.”  To Filipski’s knowledge at the time of the interview, only the father and son were inside the home when the fire started.

The homeowner took in some smoke, but was not transported when Cheektowaga Chronicle talked to a supervisor at American Medical Response.

An official cause will be determined by the Cheektowaga Police Fire Investigation Unit.

Bellevue was assisted at the scene by the Cheektowaga Police, Forks Fire Department, South Line Fire Company, Lancaster’s Twin District Volunteer Fire Company and AMR.  Doyle Hose Company #1 stood by at Bellevue’s fire hall.
