CHEEKTOWAGA – A Depew man was charged with Felony Possession of Marijuana after the police investigated a hit-and-run crash on Union Road and later found a significant amount of pot in a storage unit across the street from the police station.

The crash involving six cars happened around 3 pm on Union Road near Town Hall Wednesday. Witnesses told arriving police officers that the hit-and-run driver fled to Life Storage across the street from the police station.

When police caught up to the driver, Brian Kubisty, 36, of Arlington Place in Depew, Assistant Chief of Police Jim Speyer says Mr. Kubisty told the police that he left a marijuana pipe inside one of the storage units.

Cheektowaga Police requested a drug dog from the NFTA Police, and the pup detected drugs inside a unit.

A search warrant was issued by Cheektowaga Town Justice Paul Piotrowski and then executed by the police just before 5 pm.

Police officers found two pounds of marijuana inside the storage unit. The estimated street value of the pot is around $5,000 according to police.

Court records show that Mr. Kubisty was charged with Felony Possession of Marijuana, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, a Marijuana violation, and five vehicle and traffic violations.

He was arraigned in front of Cheektowaga Town Justice Dennis Gorski Thursday morning.  He will return to court on November 17th.

No one was hurt as a result of the crash.
