CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. – Two people and a dog escaped an overnight house fire in South Cheektowaga.

Heavy smoke was puffing from the eves of 35 East Rouen Drive when South Line Fire Company Assistant Chief Dennis Rydzynski, Jr. arrived on location just after 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.

“I did a 360 of the building and found that I had some heavy fire in the back corner above the kitchen window.  I made it as an attic fire,” said Rydzynski.

“The first line went through the garage door.  The second line, my backup line, went through the back patio and hit it from the outside.  We blitzed it from the outside and then had a crew making their way inside.”

A married couple and their dog were able to escape the fire unharmed.

The Cheektowaga Police Fire Investigation Unit was called to the scene to help determine a cause. “Preliminarily it looks electrical, but until the investigator gets here and looks at it, we won’t know the cause until they get here and complete their investigation,” added Rydzynski.

Total damages were not immediately available, but Rydzynski said there was fire and water damage to the kitchen and a bedroom.  A portion of the roof was also damaged.  Firefighters were in a position at this fire to open windows rather than breaking them.  Rydzynski says that will cut down on the total damages.

South Line was assisted at the scene by Bellevue, East Seneca, Twin District and American Medical Response.  Forks Fire Department was stationed at South Line’s fire hall.
