CHEEKTOWAGA – It appears that a tragic, yet preventable accident took the life of a 5-month-old infant on East End Avenue Sunday according to Cheektowaga Police.
Pine Hill firefighters, police officers, and AMR medical personnel rushed to the scene just after 12 pm Sunday after a 911 caller reported that the infant was not breathing. Attempts by the first responders to resuscitate the infant were unsuccessful.
Assistant Chief of Police Jim Speyer tells Cheektowaga Chronicle that police were told that the infant was in bed with mom.
“[Detectives] believe she probably rolled over on the baby and caused the death,” said Mr. Speyer.
Investigators believe the cause of death to be accidental pending the outcome of an autopsy.
“We’ll follow-up and speak with people just to check out if there was anything else behind the scenes that we didn’t know about. It’s not a done investigation,” added Mr. Speyer.
Around 3,500 sleep-related deaths involving infants are reported in the US every year according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They recommend that caregivers place babies on their back for every sleep. If you wish to share your room with your baby, the infant should be placed in a bassinet next to the bed.
