Passenger suffers a broken jaw in distracted driving crash

CHEEKTOWAGA – A driver and his passenger were hurt after he crashed into a tree on Southgate Road overnight Monday.

The crash happened around 2:30 am in front of 151 Southgate Road.

Andre D. Wise Jr., 19, of East Ferry Street, Buffalo, was driving a 2006 Nissan Murano at a high rate of speed eastbound on Southgate Road according to police.

Mr. Wise told police he became distracted by his cell phone.  He looked down quickly and saw another car coming towards him when he looked back up.  He swerved to avoid the vehicle and hit a tree.

He suffered an injury to his lower extremity.  His passenger, an 18-year-old man, suffered a head injury and broken jaw.  Both were transported to Erie County Medical Center.

The investigation is ongoing, and traffic tickets could be issued.

Cleveland Hill firefighters attended to the scene. The vehicle was towed by Royal Collision to the police department’s impound lot.
