CHEEKTOWAGA – A handful of Maryvale students were checked out by medical personnel at the scene of a school bus crash on Beach Road Friday afternoon.

Police tell Cheektowaga Chronicle that the school bus operated by First Student was traveling southbound on Beach Road dropping off students just after 3:30 pm for the Cheektowaga-Maryvale Union Free School District.

As the bus was approaching a stop at Laurentian Drive, it and a car immediately behind it slowed down.  Police said the bus had not activated its warning light system.

A pickup truck driver behind the car did not stop in time and pushed the car into the bus.  The car was lodged under the bus and sustained significant front-end damage.  Police could not immediately determine if the driver’s foot slipped off the brake pedal or hit the accelerator when the car was hit from behind.

Around 17 students were on the bus.  A handful of people at the scene including some students were evaluated for injuries by an ambulance crew but police say no one was transported to the hospital.

The police issued the driver of the pickup truck a ticket for Following Too Closely.
