HAMBURG – A Vienna Lager brewed by a Cheektowaga resident was chosen “Best of Show” at the Erie County Fair’s 2018 Home Brew Competition.
Kevin DiTondo’s recipe for the amber colored brew with a rich toasty character was submitted to staff at Flying Bison Brewery for mass production for public consumption at the fair’s beer gardens. Try-It Distributing was selected to handle limited distribution to select stores.
The idea to brew the winning selection came after his brother brought back home a Vienna Lager from Virginia’s Devil’s Backbone Brewing Company.
“I liked it so I tried to model it against that,” said Mr. DiTondo.
He has been brewing since 2010 when he received a homebrew kit as a Christmas gift and won several awards at the Amber Waves of Grain competition in 2017. This was his 3rd year entering the Erie County Fair Home Brew competition.
His Irish Extra Stout also took home the 2nd place Best of Show medallion.
So what’s on tap for next year?
“I just brew on the whim so I don’t really plan anything out,” said Mr. DiTondo.
Several other Cheektowaga residents were honored for their recipes. Carl Janish took home gold for his American Pale Ale and Jesse Walters took home silver for his Oud Bruin.
The Erie County Fair runs from August 8-19th.
