CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. – The Cleveland Hill Fire Department and three mutual aid fire companies fought an early morning garage fire attached to a commercial building.
Firefighters were alerted to the fire at 3811 Harlem Road just before 4:30 a.m. Friday.
“When we first arrived we had a two car garage attached to a brick building and the garage was fully involved. Our crews made an initial attack on the side door and put the fire out,” said Cleveland Hill Fire Chief Matthew Chowaniec.
Crews spent nearly two hours at the fire scene. The bulk of the work was overhauling the building to make sure the fire was out.
“The garage has a steel roof on it. There’s a thin layer between the roof and the old asphalt roof that we were trying to verify that there was no fire that extended between those two parts,” added Chowaniec.
The garage is attached to a two-story brick building. It’s anchor tenant is Ink Spot Tattoo. Chowaniec credits a fast response for keeping the fire out of the main building and minimizing damage to a small amount of water and smoke.
“As our guys walked around the building it was quite a large commercial structure. We would have been here a lot longer – all day – if we hadn’t gotten here quickly initially to knock down that fire quickly. It was a good job be my crews and all the responding mutual aid companies we had today,” said Chowaniec.
Cleveland Hill has aided at the scene by Pine Hill Fire Company, U-Crest Fire Department and Rescue Hose Fire Company. Hy-View Fire Company was stationed at Cleveland Hill’s fire hall covering any additional emergency calls.
Harlem Road was closed in both directions at Cleveland Drive and Kensington Avenue for the duration of firefighter operations.
Damages were not totaled. The fire is under investigation by the Cheektowaga Police Department’s Fire Investigation Unit.
