CHEEKTOWAGA – Western New York’s all-time leading scorer in basketball came back to his alma mater Friday to announce that he was going to play ball for St. Bonaventure University.

Dominick Welch beat the previous record set by Ritchie Campbell last February amassing 2,376 career points while playing for Cheektowaga Central.

“He has left an impression here that is never going to be surpassed.  He scored over 2,300 points.  He’s a career leading rebounder, shot blocker, Mr. Everything,” said Director of Athletics Brian Hickson.

Mr. Welch took a year to attend Spire Academy in Ohio; an academy focused on developing and preparing student-athletes to be successful in college.

“He did what he had to do both on the court and more importantly in the classroom,” said

“To see where he has come from and how he has matured both on and off the court.  We can say how proud we are of him and what he has accomplished,” said Warriors Basketball Coach Patrick Cullinan.

Basketball programs from Siena College and Loyola Marymount University were in talks to bring Mr. Welch on board, but he ultimately settled on St. Bonaventure.

“I just felt that it was a great fit for me.  They have been recruiting me for about two years now,” said Mr. Welch. “I just feel the most comfortable there.  It’s real close to home where my family and friends can come out and watch me, and I feel that it will put me in the best opportunity to make my dreams come true.”
