CHEEKTOWAGA – The dangerous dog hearing stemming from a mauling last Sunday afternoon has been adjourned until later in October according to the town attorney.

Mohamud Khalil of 808 Borden Road will return to town court on October 30th at 9 am.  The case was adjourned until then to give him time to retain an attorney.

The Town of Cheektowaga says four dogs belonging to Mr. Khalil and his brother attacked a 7-year-old Puggle belonging to The Keglers of Castlewood Drive on October 7th.

Court summonses obtained by Cheektowaga Chronicle say the daughter of Mr. Khalil was walking with four dogs owned by the family in their 3.5-acre backyard that backs up to the Keglers Castlewood Drive home.

The four dogs, Asia, Diamond, Princess, and Sudan, “tore open and breached” a wooden stockade fence separating the yards and began to attack Pug.  When a neighbor tried to intervene, Sudan bit the man.  He sought treatment at Erie County Medical Center for multiple dog bites.

The Keglers dog, Pug, died four hours later at an emergency veterinary hospital.  The four dogs were surrendered to the town a few days later.  They remain in the town’s custody.

The Cheektowaga town council is now looking at revising the section of the town code about dogs.  The council met Tuesday night and had preliminary discussions about making changes to the code.

Talks focused on the possibility of limiting the number of dogs based on a whole parcel of land, revising impound fees, and tightening licensing requirements by proving residency.

The town board said nine dogs could theoretically live on a parcel of land that houses a building with three apartments because the law limits three dogs to each apartment.
