CHEEKTOWAGA – A single-car crash Monday afternoon snarled traffic on Union Road for over eight hours while emergency responders and utility crews worked the scene.
The accident happened around 1:15 pm on Union Road just north of Clover Place.
A 2014 Chevy Impala was traveling southbound on Union Road in the left lane when the 78-year-old driver thought he saw a vehicle coming up behind him at a high rate of speed. The driver lost control of his car while he was changing lanes, went over the curb, and crashed into a utility pole and traffic sign according to a Cheektowaga Police crash report.
The utility pole was broken into several pieces causing cable wires to be ripped from several homes on the 4000 block of Union Road. This caused minor damaged to several homes.
The driver complained of face pain but did not go to the hospital. He was later transported to an address on Goemble Avenue in Buffalo by a police officer.
Traffic on Union Road was impacted between Genesee Street and George Urban Boulevard until 9:00 pm while crews repaired the damaged pole and cable lines.
