CHEEKTOWAGA – Within four minutes of Cheektowaga 911 receiving the active shooter call, six officers were on scene subduing the suspect.
Lt. Anthony Filipski, Sgt. Scott Grant, Police Officers Dominic Schwartz, Mark Zimmerman, Anthony Devencentises, and Jeffery Fial were credited with the arrest by Cheektowaga Police Chief David Zack.
“An absolutely remarkable job, the town is proud of them, this police department is proud of them, and we know that their families are proud of them,” said Chief Zack.
As the officers were arriving at the Dollar General on November 14th witnesses pointed out the suspect, who was running away from the scene northbound on Union Road.
The officers were able to subdue him and brought the man under arrest a few hundred feet away from the scene.
“Under the circumstances these officers faced, they performed heroically, they performed as they have been trained, our dispatchers in a clearly confusing situation did a remarkable job,” added Chief Zack.
“We will debrief when its all said and done. We will look to see if there were things we could have possibly done better, but on its face – you consider the response time, the suspect has been taken into custody, there were no major casualties – it was training, it was luck, it was skill, it was all of the above.”
And most importantly, the officers are going home to their families tonight.
“They’re doing great, they’re doing great, and we are extremely proud of them and we’re happy they are all here most of all. They couldn’t have done a better job. They’re the best of the best and we have 129 officers here – extremely dedicated. We are extremely proud of all of them, but today, we’re particually proud of them.”
