CHEEKTOWAGA – Heavy snow will start to taper down through Sunday afternoon as a winter storm moves out of the Western New York area, but frigid air and gusty winds on the backside will produce dangerously low wind chill temperatures through Monday.

The Cheektowaga area is still under a winter storm warning until 6 pm Sunday.  A wind chill advisory will be in effect from 6 pm Sunday until 7 pm Monday.

The National Weather Service says our area can still expect some additional snowfall, possibly 1-2-inches per hour, as the storm moves east on Sunday.

Winds gusts are expected to reach 25 to 30 mph Sunday evening causing blowing and drifting snow and plummeting the real feel temperature to -20 to -40 degrees.  Temperatures will not return to seasonal values much on Monday with highs only in the single digits.

Lake effect snow is a possible scenario for Monday, and we could see light accumulations of 1 to 3-inches.

The National Weather Service says around 11 inches of snow fell at the Buffalo airport weather station.

Several flights in and out of Buffalo are delayed or canceled Sunday morning.  Check the airport’s website if you’re traveling.

No significant issues were reported to Cheektowaga Emergency Services overnight, but Cheektowaga Chronicle was told that some residents have not been following the town’s parking snow ban.  You’re asked to remove your cars from the street so the highway department can plow them efficiently.
