Amherst parent says Cheektowaga hockey team racist

CHEEKTOWAGA – An Amherst parent took to the airwaves of WGRZ-TV Friday night and levied a charged against the Cheektowaga amateur hockey team saying the team made inappropriate motions and called his son a derogatory and racist word.

Dr. Darren Brown-Hall told the Buffalo NBC affiliate that his son was called a “monkey” by the Cheektowaga amateur high school hockey club during a game in November and the team was also making monkey motions and monkey noises.

The account was video recorded by someone off of the ice and posted to YouTube in January.

Dr. Brown-Hall is upset because he feels the league is not investigating the racism charge fast enough – which he submitted in February – and questions why the New York State Amateur Hockey Association would prevent his child’s team from playing in the league’s playoffs.  The playoff game was scheduled to take place in Cheektowaga and was canceled due to the ongoing investigation.

The coach of the Cheektowaga team and league officials did not respond to the television station’s request for an interview.  Cheektowaga Chronicle has also reached out to league officials regarding the video.
