Target Plaza on Walden evacuated

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. – A major shopping center in the heart of Cheektowaga’s commercial corridor was evacuated Saturday evening after a suspicious package was found at the Walden Avenue Target store.

Assistant Chief of Police Jim Speyer tells Cheektowaga Chronicle an inert package was found in the battery recycling bin at the Target store on Walden Avenue. The Erie County Sheriff’s bomb squad x-rayed the package to be safe.

Customers and associates were evacuated from the store and Cheektowaga Police secured the entrance with crime scene tape.

A customer who was inside the Target store at the time of the evacuation tells Cheektowaga Chronicle the store’s public address system told everyone to exit the store due to an emergency.

Pier 1 Imports next door to Target was also closed.  Michaels appeared to remain open.

The Target store reopened at 9 p.m. Saturday.
