Southwest Pilot declares emergency after lightning strike

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. – A Southwest Airlines pilot declared an emergency after encountering a lightning strike Thursday afternoon.

Southwest flight #78 was en route to Buffalo from Chicago when the plane was struck by lightning around 4:15 p.m.  The bolt hit near the pilot’s window according to NFTA spokesperson Helen Tederous.

The plane landed safely with 138 people onboard.
