Shanley Street hit-and-run victim dies

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. – The young man struck by a hit-and-run driver on Shanley Street Friday morning has died according to Cheektowaga Police.

Damian Garra, 18, passed away from his injuries Saturday.  Police say he was struck by Paul Hintermeier, 36, of Shanley Street just after midnight Friday.

Mr. Garra was first transported to Sisters of Charity Hospital, St. Joseph Campus to be stabilized before he was transferred to Erie County Medical Center.

Mr. Hintermeier was arraigned Friday morning and remained in jail.  He was charged with DWI, Open Container of Alcohol in a Motor Vehicle, Refusal of a Breath Test, Vehicular Assault, Leaving the Scene of an Injury Accident, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, Driving at an Unsafe Speed, Failure to Stop at a Stop Sign, and Failure to Keep Right.

Cheektowaga’s Assistant Chief of Police Jim Speyer tells Cheektowaga Chronicle that the department will be consulting with the District Attorney’s Office on further charges.
