A law enforcement source at the scene tells Cheektowaga Chronicle the officer was attending to a different property damage accident and was blocking traffic in the right lane to protect one of the vehicles.

While the police officer was outside of the patrol car talking with one of the victims from the crash, a white Chevrolet Express van rear-ended the patrol car.

The driver of the van and the police officer were not hurt.

Another police officer responded to the scene to investigate and document the crash.  Possible traffic violations to the van driver were not immediately known.
