Driver smashes into gas pump causing fire, later detained by police

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. – A car smashed into a gas pump at Red Top Markets on George Urban Boulevard early Saturday morning causing a small fire.

The incident happened just after Midnight when a driver smashed into one of the gas pumps shearing it from its concrete base sparking the fire.  The driver then drove away from the scene.

U-Crest firefighters responded and extinguished the fire using suppressant foam.

Police officers shut down George Urban Boulevard and the surrounding streets near the gas station while fire crews mitigated the hazard.

Police officers were able to catch up to the suspect vehicle and driver at an address on the 100 block of Pinehurst Avenue.  A man was taken into custody by police and a Buick was towed from the scene.

A law enforcement source tells Cheektowaga Chronicle that during their investigation, police discovered that the car was reported stolen from the Town of West Seneca.

Charges were not immediately available at the time of publication.
