CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. – A Cheektowaga Police officer is out of work after suffering a concussion and a bite while trying to break up a fight at the Walden Galleria last month.

Cheektowaga Police say the incident happened on April 8th.  An officer was in the Walden Galleria and a shopper came up to him to report that two 16-year-old girls were about to fight.

“The officer responded to the area and found the two girls already exchanging punches.  He ordered the two to break it up but they refused to do so. He stepped in between them to separate the two and as he did so, several other youths with the girls attacked him from behind,” Assistant Chief Jim Speyer said in a news release.

“One of the youths bit the officer on the hand breaking skin and causing it to bleed.  Another one kicked the officer and a third hit the officer over the head with a heavy object,” added Speyer.

The initial girls who stated the fight were charged with Disorderly Conduct and Resisting Arrest.  The identities of the others are unknown.

The police officer is currently out of work and being treated for a concussion and an infected bite to the hand.

Anyone with information or video of the incident are asked to contact the police department at 686-3505.
