CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. – The 99th annual Erie County American Legion Convention was held at the Donovan Post on Genesee Street Saturday.
Between 75 and 100 delegates from 29 different Legion posts around the country gathered to elect officers, conduct county-wide business and present scholarships and awards to the public.
“One winner of the scholarship had a 99.7% average for the year. Another from Maryvale, a local girl, had like a 97% average,” said John Stiegler, Commander of Donovan Post 1626.
The American Legion is a nationwide organization made up of wartime veterans whose mission is to help fellow veterans.
“We gather so people are there to help the incoming veterans, the people who are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan to try and take care of them. If people are in need or in financial crisis we try and help them out. We’re just here for veterans,” said Mr. Stiegler.
“If (a veteran) needs help or needs assistance or is looking for information on veterans benefits or anything of that nature – this is the place you can get it.”
Anyone wartime veterans interested in joining the Legion can stop by the post to pick up an application. They are located at 3210 Genesee St, Buffalo, NY 14225.
